Inspired by the work of two UCSC professors, the organization came into being in 1994. Working with partners, it has restored 64 islands worldwide, benefiting 487 species and subspecies. Island Conservation is headquartered in Santa Cruz with field offices in Chile, Ecuador, Hawaii, New Zealand, Palau, and Puerto Rico.
