The San Diego Zoo is sited on 100 acres in Balboa Park in the City of San Diego.
It was founded by San Diego physician Dr. Harry Wegeforth, who collected the animals left behind by the 1915 Panama-California Exposition, and who also founded the Zoological Society of San Diego.
Taking advantage of its expansive grounds, the zoo pioneered use of outdoor enclosures simulating the animal's natural habitat to the extent possible.
Today, the zoo takes advantage of the Internet so you watch the animals up close from afar. There are a dozen separate wildlife cameras, including the Red Panda Cam, the Condor Cam, and the Giraffe Cam.
