Gateway Mountain Center is a nonprofit community where young people learn to be self-aware through connection with nature, self, and the community.
Created as a place for youth to learn, heal, and thrive, the Gateway Mountain Center in Truckee has a mission to improve the lives of kids who’ve been through traumatic experiences by taking them on wellness adventures coupled with nature-based learning. Incepted in 2005, Gateway Mountain Center works with the school district to provide therapeutic one-on-one mentoring with a focus on nurturing participants’ resiliency, self-awareness, and grit.
Using its innovative “Four Roots for Growing a Human” and Whole Hearts, Minds, and Bodies programs, Gateway Mountain Center emphasizes using nature as a guide and therapeutic playground for people ages 5-23 to build healthy connections and start the process of healing. Types of adventures that Gateway Mountain Center provides to local high-risk youth include rock climbing and kayaking in the summer and snowboarding and snowshoeing in the winter. Meditation, yoga, and mindfulness practices are also highly encouraged to cope with stress and come to a place of happiness and peace.
