In 1969, California and Nevada banded together to create the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency to manage the development of Lake Tahoe, which covers two states and multiple counties. The agency—the nation’s first bi-state regional environmental planning agency—is governed by a 15-member governing board and a 21-member advisory planning commission, as well as many stakeholders and members of the public.

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) has released Connections 2050, the draft update to the Regional Transportation Plan/Sustainable Communities Strategy. The plan outlines a vision for a comprehensive transportation system that will preserve Tahoe's environment, reduce congestion, and improve safety over the next 25 years, the agency said today.
With limited land, varying policies between counties, and environmental regulations to consider, it's no wonder that housing development has been a challenge in the Basin.
