In a 7-1 vote with two commissioners recusing on Thursday, Sept. 12, the California Coastal Commission approved Monterey-Salinas Transit’s controversial SURF! Busway project, an off-highway busway that is planned to span from Marina to Sand City west of Highway 1.

On Friday, July 26, when California Coastal Commission staff released a report regarding Monterey-Salinas Transit’s proposed SURF! busway from Marina to Sand City, the surf was looking down – the report said in no uncertain terms that the project was “not approvable” under the law, in this case, the Coastal Act.

For those who’ve read the California Coastal Commission’s July 26 report about Monterey-Salinas Transit’s proposed SURF! project, which seeks to build an off-highway busway between Marina and Sand City, one might get the impression they’re reading an obituary for a proposal about to be put in its grave.
