Born in New Jersey, Bill Lauritsen moved to Lincoln in 2017. He went to college in his home state, graduating from Rutgers with an MBA, and then became a certified public accountant. Joining the United States Foreign Service in 1985, he began a career as a finance officer with the U.S. Department of State. He is a member of the Northern California chapters of the American Foreign Service Association, the Sierra Club and Phi Beta Kappa. Active in politics, he is a member of the Lincoln Democratic Club and a delegate to the California Democratic State Convention. He is also a member of Lincoln Rotary. Since 2019, he has served on the Lincoln Economic Committee and is now a council representative to the committee.

Lincoln Mayor Holly Andreatta and three other councilmembers censured colleague William Lauritsen over an assault complaint by local businessman Matthew Oliver, barring the councilman from serving on regional or city committees. Lauritsen asserted he will not resign from the council because there was no assault.
