National Poll Worker Recruitment Day, August 23, is a National Day of Action established by the U.S. Election Assistance Commission to encourage people to serve as poll workers. The San Benito County Elections Department marked the date by honoring one of San Benito Countyβs longest serving Poll Workers, Ruth Erickson, as Poll Worker of the Year. Ruth has dedicated 20 years of service to San Benito County Elections.

New Job
Jaclyn Muro has been named executive director of Gilroy Foundation, taking over from Donna Pray, who is retiring. Muro worked for Christopher Ranch for more than a dozen years, where she was surrounded by the familyβs philanthropic efforts to improve educational opportunities for young Gilroyans.
Not many organizations can boast a century-long longevity, but FRFG (Freely Receive, Freely Give) can. To commemorate the book and study clubβs 125th anniversary, the second floor of Old City Hall was adorned with blue and white decorations for a celebratory luncheon that took place on May 5.
On May 2, Victoria Montoya received the Outstanding Migrant Health Center Board Member Award at the 2023 National Association of Community Health Centerβs Conference for Agricultural Worker Health. This yearβs conference was held in Seattle, Washington.
The Gilroy Assistance League announced its 2023 grant recipients at a luncheon and presentation held April 19 at Eagle Ridge Golf Course. Recipients were recognized for their efforts on behalf of South Santa Clara County children. During the 2023 grant cycle, GALs awarded a total of $31,939.41 in funds to 12 local organizations.

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond announced April 20 that Hollister High School is one of 14 schools in the state to have earned a 2023 California Green Ribbon Schools award. βWe congratulate this yearβs honorees,β Thurmond said. βCalifornia Green Ribbon Schools exemplify leading-edge models for improved indoor air quality, outdoor classrooms, and whole-school environmental education.
The local Hollister Elks Club (No. 1436) recently submitted its yearly charitable giving report to the national Elks headquarters showing a grand total of $93,755.00. This is an impressive contribution from a club known as a fraternal and social organization.
