Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority is an independent special district that provides services throughout the county, including Campbell, Cupertino, Gilroy, Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, Los Gatos, Milpitas, Monte Sereno, Morgan Hill, Mountain View, Palo Alto, San Jose, Santa Clara, Saratoga and Sunnyvale.
The authority oversees bus, light rail, and paratransit services in the county, and is a funding partner in regional rail service, including Caltrain, Capital Corridor, and the Altamont Corridor Express.
VTA also serves as the county’s congestion management agency, with responsibility for promoting transit-oriented development and designing highway, pedestrian, and bicycle improvement projects.
VTA wants to increase its presence, and ridership numbers, by pumping dollars into community groups near its light rail stations.
Silicon Valley transportation leaders are closer than ever to turning San Jose’s doorstep into one of the West Coast's largest mass transit hubs. They just have to come up with billions to pay for it and get residents on board with the ongoing effects of major construction over the next few decades.
Federal funding will be flowing into Silicon Valley to help expand BART service to Santa Clara, but the revenue is just short of VTA’s request, leaving officials looking for ways to plug the shortfall.
The top industry award from the American Public Transportation Association honors a public transportation system member that has demonstrated achievement in efficiency and effectiveness.
