The Sierra Nevada resort town of South Lake Tahoe attracts both adrenaline seekers and nature lovers year-round with outdoor pursuits and pristine beauty. Skiing, snowboarding, hiking, biking, golfing, boating—every day looks like a Lands’ End photo shoot. Indoors, the five-member city council—three councilmembers, a mayor, and a mayor pro tem – take care of civic business affecting the roughly 22,00 citizens.
Five councilmembers, elected at large for four-year staggered terms, govern the city. The city clerk and treasurer are also elected by voters. Races for these positions are held in November of even-numbered years.
The Planning Commission meets on the third Thursday of the month at 3 p.m. unless otherwise noted. Meetings are live-broadcast online and on Charter Cable SLT Channel 21. Past meetings are archived on the city website.

As the City of South Lake Tahoe 2024 Community Survey nears its closure date, city staff are urging those who have yet to participate to take the survey.
A red, white, and blue clad Uncle Sam has jumped into efforts opposing the vacancy tax, waiving a rally sign, followed by a newly launched website from a recently formed coalition advocating against the tax and other measures.
