Norma Alcala grew up in West Sacramento and is passionate about voting rights, electing women to government, and service. She served as the state director of the California High School Voter Registration Project for two years and helped register 10,000 high school students as voters. She is the former president of the West Sacramento League of Women Voters and the West Sacramento chapter of LULAC, the Latino-American equivalent of the NAACP. Alcala also served as the former president of the Holy Cross Parish Council and former president of the Holy Cross Altar Society, where she organized several volunteering events.
Alcala is known for her public speaking. She is frequently asked to speak at political gatherings, including the Women’s March and Immigrant Rights rallies. In May 2016, she was the introductory speaker for Bernie Sanders at Bonney Field—an event attended by 21,000 people. Alcala and her husband live in Broderick-Bryte, where five generations of her family have lived. They have five grown children and ten grandchildren.
Her community service has earned her the following accolades: Mentor of the Year from both UC Davis Young Dems and Sac State Young Dems; the California Outstanding Volunteer and Innovator Award; and Yolo County Woman of the Year.
