Democractic Socialists of America Santa Cruz is a socialist group that is dedicated to creating a democratically controlled economy in Santa Cruz. With capitalism often being controlled by the wealthy, it leaves power and decision-making to very few individuals. DSA Santa Cruz desires instead to give control back to the people, allowing for mutual ownership of the economy and decisions affecting the working class to be decided by the working class. Bringing more diversity and voices into the economic system will ideally allow for a balance of power and satisfaction among residents of the city.

Santa Cruz has, over the past 30 years, become more controlled by the real estate market and extreme upper class. DSA Santa Cruz aims to regain the city’s prior reputation of being a “leftmost city” that brings power back to students, small business owners, residents and more. The group also strives to bring isolated social issues together into one larger fight for equality, justice, and fair living.
