<p><strong>Monterey Bay Economic Partnership (MBEP) coordinated</strong> a regional visit on July 11 with U.S. Sen. Alex Padilla’s State Field Representative Margaret Arechiga, focused on housing, broadband, infrastructure, and economic development investments in the Monterey Bay region. </p>

<p>The day kicked off with the grand opening of MBEP member Community Housing Improvement Systems and Planning Association (CHISPA)’s new Alfred Diaz-Infante Apartments in East Garrison on the former Fort Ord in Monterey County, where 43 of the community’s 66 new rental homes have been allocated to farmworker families. Those much-needed housing units would not have been possible without public investments, including federal Low-Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC) that Sen. Padilla has been a champion to help secure and expand. </p>
<p>MBEP and Arechiga then attended MBEP member San Benito County Business Council’s Monthly Luncheon in Hollister. The main topic was investing in a new high school to ensure high-quality education for local youth. MBEP also shared an update on how its collaborative efforts have led to the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) awarding $45 million in grant funding to three regional internet service providers in recent months for broadband expansion on the Central Coast. </p>
<p>MBEP capped the visit by facilitating a meeting with City of Hollister officials to discuss priority projects, including investments in water infrastructure, airport expansion, and Highway 25 improvements. Each of these is critical to creating more economic development opportunities for the region.</p>
<p>Sen. Padilla’s team challenged MBEP to continue building the region’s capacity to access federal investment for these important initiatives. MBEP fully embraces the challenge and appreciates its partnership with Sen. Padilla’s team. MBEP looks forward to their next visit. </p>

<p><strong>The California Department of Motor Vehicles</strong> (DMV) reminds customers that the Hollister office, located at 80 N. Sally St., implemented modified public hours on July 1. The office remains open to the public on Tuesdays and Thursdays. </p>
<p>On weekdays when the office is closed to the public, DMV team members process transactions started online that require additional processing or with customers transactions started using the DMV’s <a href="https://email.dmvonline.ca.gov/t/y-l-mjhtkjd-hlqmxur-y/" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">Virtual Office</a>. This will help improve efficiency and speed up processing times for all customers as more tasks are completed online. <a href="https://email.dmvonline.ca.gov/t/y-l-mjhtkjd-hlqmxur-j/" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">As previously announced</a>, starting June 3, 2024, the DMV no longer processes simple transactions in offices that can easily be completed online or through other convenient options.</p>
<p>The DMV’s ongoing customer-focused digital transformation provides many opportunities online or through other convenient options to complete DMV tasks. Most DMV transactions do not require an office visit and can be conveniently started or completed online at <a href="https://email.dmvonline.ca.gov/t/y-l-mjhtkjd-hlqmxur-t/" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">dmv.ca.gov/online</a>. </p>
<p>The DMV closely reviewed transaction volumes, staffing, wait times and other criteria at its 170 offices statewide to determine which offices to move to a modified schedule while still being able to meet the in-office needs of the communities they serve. The DMV expects the change to have minimal impact on overall wait times.</p>
<p>Customers should note that regular DMV office hours are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. On Wednesdays, offices open at 9 a.m.</p>
<p>Before Going to an Office – Try Online First!</p>
<p>The DMV has taken many steps to offer more digital services. Most DMV tasks do not require an office visit, including simple self-service transactions that are no longer available in offices. The DMV encourages customers to use its <a href="https://email.dmvonline.ca.gov/t/y-l-mjhtkjd-hlqmxur-i/" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">online services</a> and other service channels to complete transactions, including eligible driver’s license and vehicle registration renewals. Customers can also use the <a href="https://email.dmvonline.ca.gov/t/y-l-mjhtkjd-hlqmxur-d/" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">Service Advisor</a> on the DMV website to learn their options to complete DMV tasks.</p>
<p>To sign up for paperless vehicle registration and driver’s license renewal notices, customers must sign in or create a secure online account at <a href="https://email.dmvonline.ca.gov/t/y-l-mjhtkjd-hlqmxur-h/" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">dmv.ca.gov</a>, and then opt in.</p>
