Get out and enjoy a slice of spring fun while celebrating nature at Soil Born Farms in Rancho Cordova.

Saturday, April 19, Soil Born will host an early Earth Day celebration with nature-focused fun for the whole family.

From 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, the farm and its demonstration gardens along the American River will be open free to the public. Soil Born Farms’ American River Ranch is considered the oldest continually working farm in the Sacramento area.

The event includes an organic plant sale. The Greenhouse Garden Shop and fruit tree nursery also will be open.

What to do with those plants? The farm is offering a timely workshop: “Garden Like a Farmer: Preparing a Garden for a Successful Season.” Soil Born’s Tyler Stowers will lead the detailed class, which runs from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

“Learn simple tips, clever tricks, and the essential basics that successful farmers rely on to ensure bountiful harvests week after week,” say the organizers.

Class fee is $30. Register here: https://soilborn.org/events/garden-farmer-41925/

Families are invited to picnic and there will be plenty of food. Besides Soil Born’s produce stand, Phoebe’s Tea & Snack Bar and the Farmhouse Kitchen will both be open and serving breakfast fare.

Explore the youth garden (and the playground, too) as well as native plant gardens and the orchard.

Arrive early for a bird walk with local expert Cliff Hawley. At 8:30 a.m., he’ll guide participants as they’re on the lookout for local and migratory birds along the American River. This class is ideal for beginning birders. Advance registration is desired; fee is $15 with proceeds supporting the ranch’s restoration fund.
