As the old saying goes, "If it bleeds, it leads." A lot of newsrooms follow this directive, so a lot of journalism can feel pretty negative. Crime, car crashes, burning buildings, corruption and bad behaviour don't have much of a positive light.

We wanted to be different. We started California Local with a mission of reporting about the civic fabric of California communities, and the contributions of local businesses, community groups and governments in making their community better.

As part of that mission, we're launching an initiative we call One Good Thing, to document good things, one at a time, in or about our communities or the state of California as a whole. As the most populous state in the US with an economy that ranks fifth among the nations of the world, there is much good here, and we want to include it in our journalism.

We've started a One Good Thing online discussion topic and are inviting members to sign in and add a thread about a good thing in their community or in the state. Contributions can be local to a certain thing or place in the state or the entire statea–or even a relevant good thing on the Internet. Upvote your favorites and we'll put them in the newsletter.

We live in a beautiful place; once in a while, let's share One Good Thing with each other.
