Santa Cruz Youth Symphony is a classical music performance and education program for young people living in the Santa Cruz region.
The Santa Cruz County Youth Symphony (SCCYS) was established in the summer of 1965 with the original intention being to develop a summer music program for Santa Cruz youth. However, the program quickly grew and was established as a youth orchestra the following year. SCCYS is currently the area's only pre-professional training grown for classical music players. The students perform original scores as well as modern classic pieces.
The mission statement of SCCYS is "To cultivate musical excellence, a love of classical music, and a spirit of collaboration among young musicians throughout Santa Cruz County; to introduce young people from all socio-economic and cultural backgrounds to the joys of orchestral and chamber music."
Those who wish to audition for the symphony must be aged 20 years old or younger and have an open schedule to commit to rehearsals and performances. Scholarships are available, and students are strongly encouraged to take private lessons outside of regular rehearsals. Parents and other adults who love orchestras are welcome to serve on the board or as volunteers.
