The Santa Cruz County Assessor sets the assessed value of local property by appraising its value under applicable state laws. The assessed value is then placed on the assessment roll with all other properties in Santa Cruz County. The assessor also approves and applies all exemptions, which are added to the roll.
The assessor does not collect property taxes. First, the Santa Cruz County Auditor adds direct assessments and applies the tax rates to create the extended assessment roll, which is sent to the Santa Cruz County Treasurer/Tax Collector.
