Sacred Heart Community Service is a San Jose-based nonprofit that provides essential services, including food aid and housing assistance, to individuals and families in need.
The organization, founded in 1964, runs a food pantry, clothes closet, and home gardening education program. Sacred Heart assists clients with rental and deposit assistance and utility bills, and provides help with finding employment, doing taxes, handling finances, and securing public benefits.
Sacred Heart has two groups that work together, Parents of Preschoolers (POP) and Early Childhood Education (ECE), to assist Latinx families with young children in San Jose. The groups provide a nine-month intensive language education course for families to improve their English and prepare children for kindergarten. In addition, Sacred Heart runs a full-day summer camp for students in grades 4 through 8, and a homework club for students in grades 1 through 6.
Team members also advocate for social justice through education on social equity, leadership training, and the Rapid Response Network, which is a community defense project to protect immigrant families from deportation.
A homeless support group in San Jose is closing down, and members are unsure about whether they will be able to continue their work.
