Councilmember Katherine Beiers

After three and a half terms on the City Council, including two years as mayor, Katherine Beiers ran for a temporary seat on the council in March of 2020.

Although she opposed the recall of her friend Chris Krohn, she ran for his seat anyway, just in case the recall succeeded. The strategy paid off, as voters narrowly approved Krohn’s recall, but also elected Beiers to replace him. A member of the leftmost wing of Santa Cruz politics, she joins a new council minority with Justin Cummings and Sandy Brown. Beiers opposes a new parking garage for downtown Santa Cruz. She identifies as a steadfast affordable housing advocate, although she took heat for voting against a four-story 100% affordable housing project in 2012 because she felt that the tenants would get crammed in too tightly together.

A retired librarian and avid runner, 87-year-old Beiers is famous for becoming the oldest woman ever to finish the Boston Marathon in 2018.

Prior Terms: 1989-1992, 1992-1996, 1996-2000, 2008-2012
