Rebuilding Together Sacramento envisions safe homes and communities for everyone. Efforts to bring this vision to fruition include repairing homes, revitalizing communities, and rebuilding lives.

In a high-cost region like Northern California, theere is always a need for affordable housing. This is especially true for vulnerable groups like older adults or people with disabilities. Rubuilding Together Sacramento partners with individuals and other groups to revitalize neighborhoods, improve homes, reduce safety risks, and conserve energy.

Rubuilding Together was founded in 1991 under the name “Christmas in April.” More than 70 volunteers came together to repair the home of an elderly disabled woman. They replaced the roof, painted, rebuilt fences, cleaned the yard and completed electrical repairs. This project launched a movement to improve the lives of low-income and elderly/disabled Sacramentans.

In 2001, Christmas in April changed its name to Rebuilding Together and started operating year-round. The group partnered with organizations such as the Agency on Aging to increase the independence of homeowners and prevent injuries by installing safety devices.

Since then Rebuilding Together has implemented various programs and services:

  • Our Dream Street—Homes on four adjacent streets were improved.
  • Critical Repair and Accessibility Program—Between 2012 and 2014, more than 200 homes received much-needed repairs.
  • Four foreclosed homes were rehabbed and purchased by first-time homebuyers from 2011-2013 thanks to a partnership with local banks.
  • In 2013-2014, Rebuilding Together helped with the home modifications and repairs for almost 700 homes.
  • The Home Energy Conservation Program was formed to create energy-saving home improvements.

These are just a few of the many services Rebuilding Together Sacramento has completed throughout the Sacramento region, partnering with the cities of Rancho Cordova, Citrus Heights, and beyond.
