The Center for Sacramento History provides education about Sacramento’s past cultural heritage. It is funded by the city and county.
First founded in 1953, the Center for Sacramento History is a great example of historical preservation of an area’s past events and its culture. The Center for Sacramento History provides both education and enrichment to the general public through exhibits featuring collections from both local families and businesses. It is also a research center for all historical records in both the city and county of Sacramento. The various artifacts and documents collected by this organization tell the rich tale of Sacramento’s heritage.
Instead of functioning like a normal drop-in style museum, the center is open for programs, events, and research. Researchers are invited to visit by appointment, with available slots Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (aside from a one-hour lunch break at noon). All appointments must be made in advance. The center also plays host to an annual speakers series and the Sacramento Archives Crawl.
If you are a history buff and feel you have something interesting to donate, contact the CSH. Donations from the public are welcome; they need not be particularly valuable monetarily but should instead represent an interesting cultural aspect of the city’s past, be it recent history or older.
