Formerly known as the Squaw Valley Ski Museum, the Sierra Nevada Olympic & Winter Sports Museum changed its name to reflect not only the history associated with the 1960 Olympic Games in Squaw Valley but also to highlight the stories, legends, and personalities within the entire Sierra Nevada region.
The SNOW Sports Museum is accessible by taking the tram at the Village of Squaw Valley up to High Camp, where visitors can tour a section of the building dedicated to winter sports and watch a short film, view memorabilia associated with the 1960 Olympics, read stories about local celebrities, and get a close-up look at artifacts portraying the evolution of snow sports in Lake Tahoe.
Moving forward, the SNOW Sports Museum’s key initiatives include interviewing and recording stories from earlier periods; creating a learning program for children; building out an online museum; archiving and databasing memorabilia; and developing internships for local high school and college students. Hopefully these initiatives will educate, inspire, and lead current and future generations to a better understanding of Tahoe’s unique mountain spirit.
