VOLUNTEER

California Association of Youth Courts aims to improve the lives of young people who have made a mistake and are brought into the juvenile justice system. The organization promotes positive youth development and justice through accountability and education.

Youth Court diverts young offenders—referred by probation, law enforcement and schools—away from the formal juvenile justice system to a community-based system. A youth charged with an offense, such as vandalism or possession of drugs, can opt to accept a trial before a jury of teen peers. Student volunteers, ages 12 to 18, are trained to lead all aspects of the Youth Court program.
