In April of 2006, Truckee resident and aspiring professional skier Roy Tuscany was at a ski training event at Mammoth Mountain when all the sudden he suffered a life-changing spinal cord injury that ultimately paralyzed his lower body.

Tuscany was devastated, seeing his career blocked and having to start from scratch to relearn everyday functions. However, with the help of his friends and family sharing their support, positivity, encouragement, and giving him bountiful high fives, Tuscany was able to rehabilitate to the point where he could step into skis and get on a chairlift at Sugar Bowl once again in March 2008.

That time during recovery inspired Tuscany to help others who find themselves in his position. Therefore, in 2009 he formed the High Fives Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit that focuses on how to prevent life-altering injuries and providing resources for those who have been affected from ski or action sports accidents.

Since its inception, High Fives has helped 357 people (including veterans) all around the United States and Canada rehabilitate and get back to the sports they love. High Fives has also contributed $95,000 in grant funding for the recovery of at least 35 Nevada-based athletes.
