The Truckee Roundhouse is a nonprofit makerspace where artisans pursue common interests, including wood working, metal working, ceramics, sewing, and 3D printing.
At the time of its opening in 2016, Truckee Roundhouse at the Truckee-Tahoe Airport proved to be the epitome of community collaboration. This nonprofit 4,800-square-foot makerspace serves as a cluster of workshops for metal shapers, clothing makers, woodworkers, ceramicists and technology experts who have access to high-quality state-of-the-art tools such as laser and plasma cutters, 3D printers, and a CNC machine. This renovated airplane storage hangar has 45 volunteers who maintain and promote the Roundhouse, helping new members get acquainted with its structure and greeting them at the front desk.
Its mission is to facilitate learning by encouraging people to create a variety of crafts, technologies, and arts—and providing them with the tools, programs, and support groups they need to succeed. The Truckee Roundhouse is 50% supported by donations. The other 50% is made by selling monthly and annual memberships to individual users, teaching group classes and workshops, collaborating with the local school district, and inviting people to free public outreach events.
Existing members range from 8 years old to 82, and its more than 300 ingenious entrepreneurs make everything from clothing to guitars. The community is united by art, innovation, and inspiration.
