Breakthrough Sacramento provides low-income and underserved students with opportunities to advance in high school and college.

This educational nonprofit prepares students with limited educational opportunities for success in college preparatory programs and entry into four-year colleges. The organization also encourages high school and college students to enter careers in education.

The organization was established in 2002 as a partnership with Applied Materials and the San Jose Unified School District. It originally served 25 students from one school. Today, its six-year program serves more than 500 students in 40 middle schools and high schools.

Breakthrough advocates for the needs of underserved youth and connects families with resources and educational opportunities. The program works by introducing students to professional role models and different careers. Staffers expose high school and college students to teaching methods and practices, and educate parents on what they can do to support their children’s academic and professional development.
