The Hispanic Foundation of Silicon Valley aims to empower Latinos in Silicon Valley by investing in education, leadership, and collaboration.
The foundation began in 1989 and took off with its first annual gala in 1990, but has widened its efforts significantly since then. The organization’s first main focus area is educational excellence, which is composed of two primary programs. The first is the Hispanic Foundation College Success Program, which directs Latino families to college and future-oriented pathways by connecting them to relevant resources. The second is the Latinos in Technology Education Initiative, which spans efforts from parental education to kindergarten to college education. The foundation also offers the Latinos in Technology Scholarship, which grants college scholarships to Latinos who excel in academic and community work.
The organization’s second goal is to see more Latinos in Silicon Valley nonprofit leadership settings. The Latino Board Leadership Academy is a 10-week program that partners with several other nonprofits and trains individuals on how to be successful as a nonprofit board member.
The final focus area is connecting Latinos in Silicon Valley to create a community. This is largely achieved through the annual Hispanic Foundation Ball and the Latino Report Card, which assesses Latinos’ quality of life in several Silicon Valley sectors including education, health, housing, environment, finances, etc. The foundation also hosts a Latinx Speaker Series, which invites Latino leaders in Silicon Valley to speak on their experience and pertinent issues affecting the Latinx community.
