Monterey County Dance Theatre introduces area dancers to multiple disciplines, including ballet and tap. Many students have grown up under the direction of this dance studio and some have gone on to dance professionally.

Monterey County Dance Theatre is directed by Janette Harkness, who has been dancing since she was a toddler. The school welcomes students into its classes year-round, and also offers recitals, full-length ballets, and summer intensives for dancers who wish to further their skills into advanced levels.

The studio was originally known as the Pauline Hall Dance Studio, and was founded by the late Pauline Hall in 1958. Harkness—who is one of Hall’s daughters—took over iin 2009. At its peak, the studio has had 250 students with various satellite campuses, but now is active primarily in King City, where it continues to present The Nutcracker each year, along with various other dance theatre productions and other performance opportunities.

Monterey County Dance Theatre runs on a 10-month curriculum, with a five-week optional summer. The school has three divisions: Pre-School, Student Level, and Adult Level.
