Most of the leadership programs at Girls Inc. of the Central Coast are run by teen graduates. Serving Monterey, San Benito and Santa Cruz counties, Girls Inc. is comprised mainly of girls ages 8 to 18 whose home language is Spanish.

Programs include “ECHO Leadership and Mentoring Program”; “Will Power/Won’t Power,” about making smart choices; and “Friendly PEERsuasion,”a two-phase substance abuse education. Promising “no embarrassment,” the group’s “Growing Together” discussions encourage communication between mothers and their daughters (ages 10 to 12) about sexual behavior and puberty. Scholarships are offered annually.
