Colfax has operated under the council-manager form of government since incorporation in 1910. This system combines the strength of an elected city council with a professional manager and staff. The city manager is appointed by the council to oversee day-to-day operations. The city manager makes recommendations to the council, implements the actions taken by the council, oversees all department directors and division managers, and interacts with other government agencies and private organizations.
