For a year, Hollister has been susceptible to a provision of a state law, known as “the builder’s remedy,” which limits how much power local jurisdictions have over residential projects. Having the state approve the city’s latest revision of the housing element would put a stop to that. But the referendum effort to rescind the 2040 General Plan threatens to increase the city’s susceptibility to the builder’s remedy and state penalties, according to Hollister Assistant City Manager Rod Powell.
The group Hollister Guardians Action submitted signatures to the city of Hollister on Jan. 21, in a referendum campaign to rescind the recently adopted 2040 General Plan, City Clerk Jennifer Woodworth confirmed to BenitoLink.

A group of San Benito County residents submitted more than 3,500 signatures Jan. 21 for a referendum petition that aims to reverse an end-of-the-year city council decision to expand Hollister’s sphere of influence for potential future development.
The San Benito County Board of Supervisors on Jan. 14 mapped out a new vision for economic growth, deciding that the county will make an all-in bet on tourism. Led by its new chair, Supervisor Kollin Kosmicki, the board redefined the mission of a committee previously created to advise the board on economic issues, directing it to focus exclusively on tourism.
On Jan. 21, the Hollister City Council rescinded a plan to end the contract that provides fire services to San Benito County and the city of San Juan Bautista. The council also rescinded a resolution committing to keep the current level of staffing in the fire department regardless of the outcome of contract negotiations that are underway.
In a 3-2 vote on Jan. 14 the San Benito Board of Supervisors rejected a proposal that would allow gas stations and alternative fuel stations to be built in the county's rural areas.
