Founded in 1968, the Emergency Food Bank Stockton/San Joaquin is a member of the California Association of Food Banks. The largest direct provider of packaged emergency food in San Joaquin County, the Emergency Food Bank is a a grassroots organization supported by donors, supporters, and volunteers.
Thousands of residents in San Joaquin County live below the poverty line and are in need of food. Resources are spread out, and many live in food deserts, where they must travel long distances in order to get nutritious fare.
Fortunately for residents of Stockton, the Emergency Food Bank’s Main Pantry at 7 W Scotts Ave. serves an average of 400 households each weekday. Each households is allowed to go twice a month, and any resident of San Joaquin County is eligible for food assistance as long as they bring ID or any document showing their address is currently in San Joaquin County.
The Emergency Food Bank hosts free classes regarding general nutrition, meal planning, and food preparation. The food bank accepts monetary donations and will also take excess food or any food that is still edible but may be discarded by grocery stores, farmers, and other businesses and organizations.
