Beginning in 1990, Animal Friends Connection was a rescue and adoption agency that also provided education. In 2000 AFC opened a cat shelter/sanctuary and by 2004 began sheltering dogs as well.

The shelter shields about 40 cats and 35 dogs from the elements at any given time. Through the organization, people may adopt, donate, foster, or volunteer. Animal Friends Connection has a mission to promote human-animal bonds and educate the public about how to humanely treat animals. The group also provides help for people who need to re-home their pets.

The majority of the staff are volunteers and donations are what provide the two meals and medical care the animals receive.

Animal Friends Connection promotes spaying and neutering, promoting it to the public and sterilizing the animals they receive. AFC is located in Lodi but endeavors to spread animal welfare education throughout the city as well as the San Joaquin County area. There are several programs, including one on training therapy dogs. AFC holds training sessions twice a year (for the past 16 years) in nursing homes in Stockton and Lodi. There is an orientation session, three on-site evaluations, and also temperament testing.
