The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan grassroots organization that seeks to mobilize people to become educated voters and raise awareness of relevant policy issues.
The League of Women Voters was first established in 1920 and its operations extend to all 50 states, through more than 800 state and local level leagues. The organization has a rich and accomplished history. The League was founded during the women's suffrage movement, six months prior to the ratification of the 19th Amendment. It helped establish the United Nations and was one of the first organizations to be recognized as an NGO by the UN. Though it started as an organization that aimed to give women a voice, it quickly expanded its mission to include all American citizens.
The League of Women Voters of California Education Fund, specifically, provides several voter education programs like the Easy Voter Guide and the Voter's Edge Coalition, which seek to encourage US citizens to study key community issues, brainstorm and discuss solutions, and increase involvement in the democratic process.
Members of the League meet and discuss various policies and political issues in an informed, civil manner. They sometimes host public forums and debates which are well-known for their educational content and civility. Members also receive opportunities for mentorship and educational workshops throughout the year. The goal is to become a more deeply engaged and educated member of society.
