The San Joaquin Audubon Society is a chapter of the National Audubon Society, a nonprofit that promotes bird and wildlife conservation.
The San Joaquin Audubon Society encourages appreciation of birds through field trips, including walks and hikes, visits to hatcheries, and time in nature; information on birding; funding and grants for environmental education, conservation, and preservation efforts; and various other chapter programs. Its logo is a yellow-billed magpie, designed by Stockton artist René C. Reyes.
San Joaquin is home to several species of birds due to its varied wildlife habitats. These include the San Joaquin/Sacramento delta, dry foothills of the Coast Range, and low foothills of the Sierra Nevada. The group’s website provides more information on where key birding sites are located, where certain birds have been sighted, and other relevant birding resources.
The San Joaquin Audubon Society was also licensed five acres of the Waldo Holt Preserve and 80 acres of landscape located to the south of Dry Creek. Both the Society and the San Joaquin Council of Governments are actively involved in conservation efforts and creating educational opportunities on the preserve.
The San Joaquin Audubon Society also started a San Joaquin Rare Bird Committee in 2020, to encourage and establish certain standards of nature observation, and increase knowledge of bird species in the county. Community members can become members of the national organization, which will automatically ensure that they become members of the San Joaquin-specific Audubon Society.
