First Five San Joaquin is part of California’s First Five initiative, which is designed to give children the best start possible in life from birth to five years.

The first movement of First Five was started when voters approved Proposition 10 in 1998, which added a special tax to each pack of purchased cigarettes. This 50-cent tax was designed to fund early childhood programs throughout California, including San Joaquin Valley. Through this allotment of funding through this tax, First Five provides financial support for various programs focused on children from birth to the age of five. This includes health, preschool, and literacy programs, as well as parent education and resource workshops.

First Five San Joaquin doesn’t work alone; rather, the organization partners with various agencies and organizations throughout the county to reach more parents, educators, and caregivers. This more effectively impacts the lives of young children. Today, thousands of parents and kids have received a higher quality of education, resources, and opportunities—and the number only continues to grow.
