The Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe is dedicated to saving and improving the lives of pets.
Providing a temporary home for orphaned pets, the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe has saved and improved the lives of countless dogs, cats, and other domesticated animals through adoptions, spay/neuter services, and education programs. Founded in 1994, the Humane Society has grown from a small grassroots effort to a nationally recognized nonprofit that has helped many abandoned beings find their fur-ever homes thanks to the aid of its 10 employees and numerous volunteers.
However, the Humane Society is desperately in need of community support since COVID-19 has affected its donations. In April 2020, the Humane Society sadly informed the public that its donations were down 65 percent as fundraisers have come to a halt. Hopefully things will get back to normal soon, but in the meantime, people can visit hstt.org and view the heartwarming adoption video to be inspired to foster, adopt, or donate to the Humane Society and virtually indulge in the types of stories usually shared at its annual Black Tie & Tails Fundraising Gala.
The Humane Society also has a shelter, spay/neuter program and pet pantry in South Lake Tahoe that serves Douglas and El Dorado counties.

Stephanie Nistler, the first employee hired by the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe in 2004, is now celebrating 20 years of life-saving work as the organization's CEO. Nistler's journey began with just one year of volunteering and fundraising before she was brought on board, marking the start of two decades dedicated to animal welfare in the Truckee-Tahoe area.
