The Eastern San Joaquin Groundwater Authority consists of 17 groundwater sustainablity agencies covering San Joaquin County and parts of western Calaveras and northeastern Stanislaus counties. Bodies of water include the San Joaquin River, Stanislaus River, Calaveras River, Mokelumne River, Mormon Slough and Littlejohns River. The goal is to insure compliance in the area with the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act, which was passed by the California Legislature in 2014 and became effective in the begining of 2015.
