Up until June 7, 2022, when 66.55% of Santa Cruz voters gave the thumbs up to Measure E, representatives on the Santa Cruz City Council were chosen in at-large races. Measure E amended the city’s Charter to create six districts and an at-large directly elected mayor. With the Nov. 8, 2022, three seats have been filled: councilmembers for Districts 4 and 6 and the new mayor.

The Santa Cruz Planning Commission on Jan. 9 unanimously approved plans for a six-story, 83-unit apartment building on the 900 block of Water Street in Santa Cruz. 
The new homes would be less than a block away from a five-story building at 831 Water St. approved in December.
