The museum’s permanent art and history exhibits are augmented by temporary shows. Special events are held throughout the year.
The Haggin’s history galleries focus on the San Joaquin Valley’s past and the stories of its best-known residents, such as Charles Weber, Stockton’s founder; Benjamin Holt, inventor of the Caterpillar track-type tractor; Tillie Lewis, the “Tomato Queen”; and the Stephens Bros. Boat Builders.
Paintings by American artist Albert Bierstadt and other creators of large landscapes enhance the museum’s collection of 19th-century American art. Also on display are paintings by contemporary European artists, including works by Neoclassical artist William Bouguereau and French Impressionist Pierre-Auguste Renoir.
The museum has undergone several additions since first opening, with new spaces added in 1939 and 1949; the Benjamin Holt Wing opened in 1976. Today the museum’s three-story building contains more than 34,000 square feet of exhibition space.
