San Jose-based nonprofit Sunday Friends offers financial literacy, writing, computer education, and other activities for low-income children and families.

The organization, founded in 1997, offers a wide variety of educational programs at three public school sites in San Jose.

Children and families can participate in classes on English fluency, financial literacy, STEM education, violence prevention, writing, computer education, and more. The basic premise of the program involves participants choosing from a variety of activities. Participants earn tickets and save them in a Sunday Friends account. They also earn interest on their savings. Participants then redeem the tickets in an on-site store for merchandise such as bikes or rent.

Parents learn how to avoid debt and scams, finance college and cars, and secure savings. Parents can also receive help from financial professionals to improve their credit, deal with collections or theft, and manage banking and loans.
