Palo Alto Humane Society is one of the few humane societies with no animal shelter. Instead this nonprofit, volunteer-supported organization educates pet owners and the public on how to prevent animals from going into shelters.

When Palo Alto Humane Society officially incorporated as a nonprofit organization in 1924, it managed stray dogs. It was then the group's leaders realized the importance of education, thus creating its first humane education program with lectures and films offered at public events. Similarly, the educational programs that are offered now focus on animals and their needs.

PAHS also partners with schools and organizations to hold public educational events. This is to spread awareness and teach attendees to value the lives of each four-legged animal that comes their way. The society provides service-based learning programs where students choose what they want to learn. In its Kiddies 2 Kitties program, for instance, local animal shelters provide cats so children can interact with the animals. There are many more programs available on the PAHS website. Check out their information if interested!
