VOLUNTEER DONATE

One of the largest food banks in the nation, Second Harvest of Silicon Valley brings healthy food to people in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties every month.

The organization was founded in 1974 as the Food Bank, Inc. of Santa Clara County. In 1988, it merged with the San Mateo County Food Bank. The organization changed its name to Second Harvest of Silicon Valley in 2019. Approximately 1 in 10 people in Silicon Valley receive assistance from Second Harvest, half of whom are children and seniors.

Second Harvest receives donations from local communities and businesses along with purchasing fresh produce. This purchased and donated food is distributed to partners, including educational organizations, soup kitchens, senior programs, housing providers and other organizations. Second Harvest also distributes food through its own grocery programs.

In distributing food, Second Harvest includes more fresh and long-lasting produce than other food banks. To reach more people, resources are distributed to community partners. Second Harvest has a network of 310 nonprofit partners at 1,000 sites.

To receive Second Harvest’s produce, individuals can search for nearby locations. Second Harvest also welcomes participants in CalFresh, a Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) that issues monthly electronic benefits which are intended to pay for food.
