VOLUNTEER DONATE

Bay Area Ridge Trail’s mission is to plan, promote and sustain a connected trail for the community to enjoy.

More than 30 years ago, William Penn Mott Jr., former director of the National Park Service, had an idea to unite the ridges encircling the Bay Area with a continuous trail. The idea was to link people, parks and open space for generations to come. In partnership with the Greenbelt Alliance, the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, and many other groups, the first Ridge Trail segment was established in 1989. Now, 380 miles of trails are open and are ready to explore for hiking, cycling, and even horseback riding.
