City Year was founded in 1988 as a national organization for young adults looking for full-time community service. Students are engaged in leadership and problem-solving situations that make them stronger individuals and citizens.
Since 1988, City Year has grown from 50 corps members in Boston to more than 3,000 members in the United States, as well as in South Africa and the United Kingdom. City Year AmeriCorps members serve as student coaches, guiding students through social, emotional and learning skills that are important in academic and real-life settings. City Year AmeriCorps member receive compensation and benefits, leadership training, and guidance in personal and career goals. The skills they develop are versatile and applicable in any career path.
San Jose is one of more than two dozen U.S. cities in which City Year operates.
