VOLUNTEER DONATE
This nonprofit provides opportunities for hands-on science exploration to about 65,000 people in 17 Northern California counties each year through mobile and on-site programs.
With programs connect science to everyday life, Explorit aims to ignite curiosity about science and nature through inquiry and discovery. Founded in the 1980s, the nonprofit has continued to combine reasoning and experience to educate its surrounding community and beyond.
Explorit characterizes its programming by four main goals: as hands-on and mission-on; informal and accessible; relevant and interdisciplinary; and complementing formal education. The organization's core programs at Explorit include permanent and changing public exhibits; workshops and classes on various subjects or topics; weekend family activities; presentations by, and conversations with, visiting scientists; children’s seasonal camps; and science clubs. Offsite activities comprise family science nights in schools; community science assemblies; teacher workshops; and science talks by topic experts. There's also a pollinator garden, a community art project and an environmental effort that helps pollinators thrive while teaching the community of their importance.
In 2023, Explorit received the Environmental Legacy Award from the Davis City Council and Natural Resources Commission for its educational and sustainability efforts. The community can help support the nonprofit through volunteering, donations or by sponsoring a critter, where participants receive a personalized certificate; fact information sheet; and their name on a posted sponsor list for one year.
