VOLUNTEER

The Yolo County Fire Safe Council works to reduce forest fire risk throughout the county and beyond through education and action.

While many consider the landscape of Yolo County to be primarily agricultural, the region is also home to urban towns and natural habitats on and around the county’s creeks and rivers. Yolo County is also a pathway for migrating birds, and the western side of the region is home to many iconic trees. All of these natural habitats and beautiful areas are prone to fire risk each and every year, and the Yolo County Fire Safe Council aims to protect these destinations through education, awareness, and action.

Most recently, portions of the county were severely damaged by the LNU Lightning Complex Fire, which has been rated as the sixth largest wildfire ever experienced in California. Through the efforts of the Yolo County Fire Safe Council, residents are made more aware of risks and taught how to properly prepare, and steps have been taken to protect natural environments before disaster hits again.

The council was founded in 2021 with coordination between Yolo Resource Conservation District and Yolo Office of Emergency Services. Meetings are open to the public, and recordings and minutes may be found on the group’s website. While individuals cannot become members at this time, almost any organization or business entity can join and help make a difference.
