VOLUNTEER DONATE
The Short Term Emergency Aid Committee is a nonprofit that provides short-term emergency assistance to families and individuals in Yolo County.
STEAC was founded in 1967 and is one of the oldest nonprofits in Yolo County. The organization provides food, housing, employment assistance, and other forms of emergency assistance to those in need.
The organization has several food-related initiatives. The first, titled the STEAC Food Project, has several components. Every two months on the second Saturday, volunteers drive around Davis and pick up green bags with nonperishable food from the front doors of individuals who sign up to donate food. One bag provides 10 meals to those in need. Volunteers can either pick up food from doors, donate food, or join the support and logistics team. STEAC also has a food pantry that actively accepts donations. Drop-off hours are Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
STEAC’s second initiative is titled Food Packs for Kids and involves providing a weekend bag of food to elementary and high school students in the School Lunch Program. A third food-related project is Holiday Adopt-A-Family, where families donate food and gifts to low-income Davis residents.
STEAC is also involved in homelessness prevention by providing cash assistance to families for rent or utilities. Qualifying residents of Yolo County can apply to receive assistance for one month’s rent for up to $1000 to prevent eviction or cover the first month’s rent/deposit. Requests for utility assistance are limited to up to $250 a year. Other notable STEAC programs include providing training for a forklift operator certificate, food handler certificate, and food manager certificate; funding student books at Woodland Community College; and providing clothing for job interviews.
