The Public Works Department maintains San Jose’s infrastructure, and its staff provides many services to residents.

The Development Services Division ensures that new construction projects provide the necessary public infrastructure, including streets, sidewalks, storm and sanitary sewers, streetlights, landscaping, and traffic signals.

The Structural Engineering & Code Inspections Section provides building code review and code inspections service for city-owned facilities. These facilities include San Jose International Airport, Regional Wastewater Facility, and the Convention Center, as well as community centers, libraries, and fire and police stations.

Public Works services include ensuring accessibility to all members of the public, providing animal care, and maintaining maps of city assets.
