In addition to her service on the council, Watanabe has served the community as as a trustee on the City of Santa Clara Board of Library Trustees (2008-2016) and president of Santa Clara Sister Cities Association (2013-2016). She also played a role in the opening of the Northside Library in the Rivermark Community.
