VOLUNTEER

Your old computer might be expired, but it could be useful to someone else.

Christian Mendelsohn started Loaves, Fishes & Computers in 2009 on his kitchen table after he fixed a neighbor’s broken computer and donated it to a friend’s son. He wants to keep families and individuals connected to technology despite their lack of resources.

To date, the program has refurbished and donated more than 7,500 computers at low cost to low-income students and seniors in Monterey County to help them with their school work or find employment. In turn, the nonprofit minimizes computer waste and trains volunteers to improve their skills in information technology. The company also hosts free, bilingual computer literacy workshops and offers affordable technical support.

The nonprofit accepts desktops, laptops, and tablets that are six years old or newer, and looks for volunteer technicians, refurbishers, equipment processors, and administrative workers.
